IIS in Asp.Net

IIS defines as Internet Information Services. It is a group of Server which is introduced by Microsoft as IIS 1.0(First version) with Windows NT 3.51 operating system in may 1995. IIS is formerly called as Internet Information Server.

IIS is a part of Windows NT family, IIS is included with the Windows NT operating system. IIS installed in a computer automatically when a user installs the Window. It may not be included with the Windows XP operating system. By default IIS is turned OFF but you can turn it ON manually.

What is Windows NT ?

Windows NT is a group of Operating system which is introduced by Microsoft. In the July 1993, Microsoft introduced the first version of Windows NT family as Windows NT 3.1. NT refers to the New Technology. All the versions of operating system (Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2012) comes under the Windows NT family.

Different Versions Of IIS

After released the IIS 1.0, Microsoft introduced the upgraded version of IIS with the upgraded version of an Operating System. These versions are IIS 1.0, IIS 2.0, IIS 3.0, IIS 4.0, IIS 5.0, IIS 5.1, IIS 6.0, IIS 7.0, IIS 7.5, IIS 8.0 and IIS 8.5.
  • IIS 6.0 was released with Windows Server 2003 & Windows XP Professional 64bit.

  • IIS 7.0 was released with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

  • IIS 7.5 was introduced in Windows 7

  • IIS 8.0 is was released in Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8

  • IIS 8.5 is introduced in Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1. It is the latest version of Internet Information Services.
IIS is used to run the World Wide Web (WWW) application and responsible for managing websites. IIS supports FTP (File Transfer Protocol), FTPS (File Transfer Protocol Secure), HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol), HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) and NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol).

Installing process of IIS 7.5 on windows 7

  1. Click Start menu ⇒ Control panel.

  2. Select Programs and Features as shown in the figure.


  3. A dialog Box opens as shown below. Open the Turn Windows Features on or off from the top of right corner.


  4. A dialog box opens as shown below. Find the Internet Information Services in the dialog box and tick the CheckBox.


  5. After pressing the OK button, Windows will install the IIS 7.5 in your computer.
